The short version
- Say the format you want. "Answer in 3 bullet points" beats "answer briefly."
- Show, don't just tell. One good example outperforms a paragraph of instructions.
- Split hard tasks into steps. Ask for a plan first, then ask it to execute the plan.
- Give it an escape hatch. "Say 'not enough information' if you're unsure" reduces made-up answers.
None of this is exotic. It's the same thing that makes instructions clear to a person.
