Picking Your First AI Tool Without Getting Overwhelmed

New AI tools launch faster than anyone can reasonably track. Here's the filter I use before trying anything new.

Three questions, in order

  1. Does it solve a problem I already have? Not a hypothetical one — a real, recurring annoyance.
  2. Can I try it in under 10 minutes? If onboarding is a maze, the tool isn't ready, or isn't for me.
  3. What happens to my data? If I can't find a clear answer quickly, that's itself an answer.

The trap to avoid

Chasing every new release keeps you busy, not productive. Pick one category (writing, coding, research, image generation) and get deep on one tool before sampling the next.

Complexity is the default state of a fast-moving space. Simplifying it just means having a rule for when to stop looking.
